Autumnal Equinox 2025

Autumn Equinox

Dear, Sincere and Grateful Children of the Earth,

Mabon is here! The Wheel of the Year has turned and we are greeting the first day of Fall in the Northern Hemisphere.

The Autumn Equinox is the time when day and night are of equal length. As we go forward toward the Winter Solstice over the next three months, nights will lengthen as we go into the “dark time” of the year.

It’s Harvest time, a time for gathering with family and friends to share the bounty of what we’ve all been doing, thinking and learning over the past few months.

This year, we’re in a time when it may feel difficult to stay grounded; it may be difficult to manage our own nervous systems and hard to predict what’s going to happen next.

In the language of Astrology, we’re talking about bringing together opposite energies. Saturn, the part of us that understands material reality and Neptune, the part of us that understands spirit, are trying to find ways to work together. They began this experiment back in June and are now in the Retrograde phase—a time when it can seem like not much is happening but big changes are happening below the surface.

By February of 2026 Saturn and Neptune will both enter Aries together. Aries is the sign of new beginnings. The last time Saturn and Neptune entered Aries together was in 7,000 BC, a time marking our transition from Paleolithic hunter-gatherers to more settled neolithic communities. Farming, the domestication of animals, and increase in the human population saw the beginnings of organized societies, trade, and social cohesion.

Fundamental questions had to be answered then, just as we are having to answer them now: How do we manage our interconnectedness? How do we manage protecting ourselves while interacting with other societies?

Compassion, kindness, and empathy (Neptune) are trying to partner with practical, physical reality (Saturn) to create a foundational shift in consciousness and how we organize our lives.

Whether we’re talking about the human race or our own personal spheres; we are in a time of fundamental change.

We may want to use this time to feel deeply into the world we want to see; to vision and dream about the reality we want to bring into being. As Caroline Casey said Imagination lays the tracks for the reality train to follow.

Namaste all you beautiful lights,

Mary

For When People Ask

I want a word that means

okay and not okay,

more than that: a word that means

devastated and stunned with joy.

I want the word that says

I feel it all all at once.

The heart is not like a songbird

singing only one note at a time,

more like a Tuvan throat singer

able to sing both a drone

and simultaneously

two or three harmonics high above it—

a sound, the Tuvans say,

that gives the impression

of wind swirling among rocks.

The heart understands swirl,

how the churning of opposite feelings

weaves through us like an insistent breeze

leads us wordlessly deeper into ourselves,

blesses us with paradox

so we might walk more openly

into this world so rife with devastation,

this world so ripe with joy.
